GENERAL RULES OF ATTIRE AND COURTROOM CONDUCT
All Parties

ALL PERSONS present in the Courtroom shall be clean, neat, and dressed in a manner that shows dignity and respect for the Court.

Unacceptable attire includes:

  • Shorts, cut-offs, baggy pants, coats(jackets), flip-flop style shoes, or hats.
  • Muscle shirts, t-shirts, clothing indicating gang affiliation or other clothing with offensive, vulgar, racist, sexist, obscene, suggestive words, slogans, depictions, or pictures, including grotesque creatures. Shirts that are torn, dirty, and ragged will not be allowed. ALL SHIRTS MUST BE TUCKED INSIDE PANTS!
  • Provocative/revealing clothing.

Courtroom Conduct

Conduct in the "Courtroom" also includes the reception/foyer area, jury room, and/or any office space assigned to the Justice Court.
PRO SE parties(non-attorney's representing themselves) should be prepared to present their cases in a proper manner.

  1. Weapons are prohibited in the Courtroom and in the Courthouse except for law enforcement personnel. ALL PARTIES ARE SUBJECT TO SEARCH.
  2. Be on time. Arriving late will result in refilling for another court date.
  3. Rise when the Judge enters and remain standing until the Judge or bailiff announces "Be seated", or until the Judge is seated. Rise when the Judge exits the Courtroom.
  4. Do not argue with the Court.
  5. Address the Court as "Judge" or "Your Honor".
  6. Address opposing parties, counsel, witness, and court officers as "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Miss", "Dr.", etc. Do not use first names except with children 14 years of age or younger.
  7. Do not approach the Judge's bench without permission. Do not rest arms on the bench. Do not approach the bench until requested to do so by the Judge or bailiff.
  8. Do not bring food or drinks into the Courtroom.
  9. Do not talk at the same time as the Court, opposing counsel, or witnesses. Courtroom visitors should not engage in excessive loud talk or conversation.
  10. Racist, sexist, obscene, or profane language is prohibited unless it is pertinent to a case and is elicited and quoted from facts in the case.
  11. Do not enter or depart the Courtroom excessively and do not slam the doors.
  12. Do nothing to disturb or distract the Court, counsels, witnesses, or other court personnel.
  13. It is normally inappropriate to bring small infants or young children into a court proceeding. Please refrain from doing so unless the presence of the child is necessary for the proceeding.
  14. Pagers and cellular phones are inappropriate in the Courtroom. Please turn them off before entering the Courtroom.
  15. All property in the Courtroom and reception areas must be treated with respect. No writing on any papers posted nor on any furniture is allowed.
  16. No recording devices are allowed without judicial approval.
