The Justice of the Peace
court has Jurisdiction over:

Class C
Misdemeanor cases,
·
Justice
Court,
·
Small
Claims Court cases, where the amount in controversy does not exceed
$5,000.00,
·
Eviction
suits,
·
Issuing
warrants for arrest,
·
Administrative
magistrate hearings,
·
Driver's
license suspensions,
·
Marriage
ceremonies,
·
Emergency
protective orders, and
·
Acts as
the county coroner.

General Rules of Attire and Conduct
In the Justice of the Peace - Precinct 4 Courtroom
Judge Clay Houdashell and her
staff would like to familiarize you with the Court and Court protocol. If you have business with the Court, we
would ask that you follow these simple rules:
u
Please wear
appropriate clothing. This would be the
same type of clothing you would wear to a job interview.
u
Please be on
time. If you are late for your hearing,
you will have to file for another court date.
u
When the Judge enters
the Courtroom it is customary to rise and remain standing until the Judge is
seated. At that time you may be seated.
u
You will be treated
with dignity and respect.
u
If you are acting as
your own attorney please bring any documents or evidence that may support your
case.
u
It is appropriate to
address the Judge as “Your Honor or Judge”.
u
You may address
others involved as Sir, Mr., Miss, Mrs., Ms. Etc. First names can be used for
a child when the child is 14 years of age or younger.
u
The Judge may ask you
to approach the bench. Please do not
lean on the bench.
u
Each person will have
time to present his or her case. Please
be respectful to the person who is testifying.
u
Visitors are
requested to refrain from talking in the courtroom while a case is being heard.
u
The Court recognizes
the fact that students like to wear “trendy” clothes. Some of this apparel is not appropriate for the Courtroom. We expect you to come before the Court in
clothing that would be appropriate for your class pictures. We have the same “Dress Code” as your school
does.
Please Consider
This

Weapons are
prohibited in the Randall County Annex.
The only exception is Law Enforcement Officers. ALL PARTIES ARE SUBJECT TO SEARCH
u
The “Courtroom” also
includes the reception/foyer area, jury, and/or any office space assigned to
the Justice Court.
u
Please extend the
same courtesies to others in the Courtroom that you would expect if you were
having a case heard.
u
Food and drinks are
not allowed in the Courtroom.
u
If possible please do
not bring small infants or young children into the Courtroom unless the child
is necessary for the case.
u
Pagers and cellular
phones must be turned off in the Courtroom.
u
No recording devices
are allowed without Judicial approval.
u
Please do not deface
the furniture in the Annex.
